Street theatre festivals

Street theatre — arts de la rue, teatro di strada, Straßentheater — is the most institutionally supported branch of this work, and the most competitive. The big French and Spanish festivals are publicly funded, book companies rather than solo artists, and often want work made for a specific site. Their calls open in winter and close months before anyone has thought about summer.

Many of the largest festivals run two programmes: an IN selection that is invited and paid, and an OFF that any company can enter, usually by registering and finding its own pitch. The OFF at Aurillac and Chalon dans la Rue is the single most realistic way into the French circuit, and plenty of companies now programmed IN started there.
