Portugal is small but unusually good for magic specifically. Lisboa Mágica and the Encontros Mágicos in Coimbra are both produced by the same company, and between them they put on hundreds of free street performances a year. Imaginarius in Santa Maria da Feira is the country's major street arts festival and works on a commissioning model, with calls that close a full year ahead.
Applying in Portugal
5 of the 7 festivals listed here accept applications directly — 1 through an online form and 4 by writing to the organisers. The rest build their programmes by invitation or through curators, which means the way in is to be seen at the festivals that do run calls.
Write in the local language wherever you can. It is a small circuit and a message in the organiser's own language reads as respect, not effort.
